10 Bad Horror Movies With AWESOME Effects

5. Melting Human Flesh - The Incredible Melting Man

Thirteen Ghosts
American International Pictures

1977's sci-fi horror film The Incredible Melting Man was near-universally panned by critics upon release, though even its most vociferous detractors generally complemented the film's staggeringly grotesque practical makeup effects.

That's little surprise given that the film's effects were handled by up-and-coming makeup artist Rick Baker, who would go on to win seven Oscars for his unforgettable work on films such as An American Werewolf in London, Men in Black, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The film follows an astronaut, Steve West (Alex Rebar), who upon returning home, finds his flesh literally beginning to melt off his bones, forcing him to consume people in an attempt to restore his lost flesh.

As awful as it might otherwise be, the film's melting effects are absolutely first-rate, depicting the man's revolting decay with a persuasiveness the script and performances simply can't.

The climactic scene, in which West melts completely into a pile of bloody goo, is worth the price of admission alone, honestly.

Despite how awesome the effects are, though, Baker originally went even further with it, designing distinct stages of the melting process which were infuriatingly cut from the final product.
