10 Bad Movies With Great Trailers
2. Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad only came out two years ago, and already the DCEU movie's behind-the-scenes issues have become the stuff of legend. The hype for David Ayer's antihero ensemble was unbelievable but when it finally hit theaters, you could almost see the grubby fingerprints of studio meddling all over it.
As strong as the marketing campaign was, it didn't exactly get off to the best of starts when the supposedly 'exclusive' San Diego Comic-Con trailer was almost immediately leaked online in very poor quality, forcing Warner Bros. to reluctantly release a high-res version the following day.
A masterclass in how to drum up excitement for a movie, the first footage did everything it needed to; Viola Davis' narration both explained the concept of the movie and established her as a woman not to be f*cked with, we saw every character with Harley Quinn and Deadshot clearly positioned as the leads, and it finished with a tantalizing glimpse of Jared Leto's already-divisive Joker in action. In short, it was superb.
In fact, Suicide Squad's entire marketing campaign was brilliantly executed, which makes it such a shame that it was quite clearly butchered in the editing room, with a huge amount of trailer footage missing in the final cut. If the project had made the most of its unique concept and undoubted potential, there could have been an all-time great comic book movie on the cards.
