10 Bafflingly High IMDb Movie Ratings You Won't Believe
4. Crash
IMDb Rating: 7.9 You'd think in 2015 it wouldn't still need to be said that Crash wasn't the deserved Best Picture winner at the 78th Academy Awards, but, as long as it can sit with that on its DVD case and Brokeback Mountain goes down in history as the gay cowboy movie with Heath Ledger, it's worth repeating. Like countless other Oscar bait-y movies that crank out an emotional response from voters based on white guilt (a trick that's still potent today), Crash looks a bit strange by today's standards, an unsubtle message overshadowing the few good performances and interesting moments. In contrast, Ang Lee's period love story only improves with age, an early show of incredible acting potential from its two leads. Obviously Oscar hype (and the belief that simply attempting inter-connected narratives is commendable) was what propelled this fine is uninsightful ensemble drama to a 7.9 rating on IMDb, with the gushing reviews of the time offsetting more recent reappraisals. It's another lofty honour the film doesn't really deserve, especially when Brokeback Mountain has only 7.7.
