10 Banned Video Nasties That Were Actually Pretty Tame

7. The Devil Hunter (1980)

I am a Jess Franco fan. There I said it. But I sure as heck am not a fan of this piece of crap he some how managed to fart out in the early 1980s. A convoluted jungle/cannibal adventure - which just about loses out to Cannibal Terror in the tame cannibal movie category. The beautiful Ursula Fellner (Laura) gets kidnapped and cannibal silliness ensues, if you can figure out the plot (if you could call it that), you've a better brain than me. The gore is tame. Franco really cannot be arsed with it at all. If you are looking for gore, you won't find it here. The dubbing is so atrocious you will actually find the film wildly comical. And just like our friends from Cannibal Terror, Franco bypassed the acting skills and authenticity of the local natives to use European stand ins who stand around looking bored and at a loss for a long duration of the film. Basically, like the bulk of messy Franco productions, nobody has a clue what they are doing and the result is an exceedingly dull affair that fails to live up to the excitement of its title. Tame because Franco didn't even inject some of his legendary perverseness into it. No pubic hair zoom shots!

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
