10. Fargo (1996)
You cant help forgiving the Coen Brothers for opening their iconic dark comedy with the claim of true events. Which is made even funnier when reading the usual end-credit disclaimer that the work is one of pure fiction. The misleading did prove an effective tool in audience perception, where moviegoers weren't so much fooled as bewildered at the very realistic absurdity they were subjected to. Besides, if offence there was in perpetrating the little hoax, it was never as ill-advised as the entirety of
Intolerable Cruelty.
