10 Batsh*t Crazy Japanese Movies You Have To See

2. Dead Leaves

Dead Leaves might feature a character with a giant drill for a penis, but when it comes to phallic symbolism it's considerably tamer than Belladonna Of Sadness, but more than compensates for this with a relentless onslaught of crazy violence. A man with a television for a head wakes up on the outskirts of a city alongside a mysterious woman, both of whom have no recollection of who they are. After being chased by an army of policemen they are arrested and sent to a prison on the moon where they lead a revolt against the evil warden and the gleefully psychotic guards 666 and 777. This flimsy plot provides director Hiroyuki Imaishi all the scope needed for what is ostensibly an insanely over-the-top 50 minute action scene, in which characters constantly power up until they're almost entirely made of weapons, and a newborn child packs more firepower than all the prison cons combined. Fast-paced is an understatement - Dead Leaves is more akin to an animated adrenaline rush.
