10 Beautiful Horror Films Of The 2010s

5. Darling (2015)

Neon Demon
Screen Media Films

This is most definitely the smallest and the shortest film on this list, which was lucky to find a place on Netflix, allowing it to garner a significant audience. Darling tells the story of young out of touch woman of the titular name, who in need of money, accepts a house sitting job for a family who own a mansion in Manhattan. The mansion in question has gained a reputation as a haunted house and we all know what happens when you enter those.

The runtime is especially short at 76 minutes, making it a compact experience for the viewer. Its also, rather interestingly filmed in black-and-white, giving it a pre-1970s vibe, where the director clearly found his inspiration. Director Mickey Keating must have studied Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and Roman Polanski's Repulsion before creating this short wonder, as many aspects of this film harken back to these exact films.

Considering how small the production was, the film is amazingly well-shot, with some outstanding close-up shots and clever movement through the strange mansion. If it weren't black-and-white it might not stand out as much as it does. Good thing it is.

I watch, then I write. It could gory horror movies or confusing yet loveable cult hits like Donnie Darko. So have a look at what I write, or don't. It's fine, I don't mind.
