10 Beautiful Horror Films Of The 2010s
4. The Void (2016)
Its easy to see how John Carpenter's The Thing is a clear inspiration for this film, the monster design is just sublime, with otherworldly flesh turned inside out and tentacles entering and exiting orifices. So by that description, this film isn't exactly going to be easy on the eye. You will, however, be intrigued by the smattering of mystic and ethereal imagery placed in between.
The pacing of the film changes throughout, with not too much room for character development, creating a lack of impact by the end of the film. In other films, adding in quite otherworldly imagery in place of wider character moments can be detrimental. For some, that is certainly the case in this film.
When you see the visions of a transcendent and paranormal dimension, with dark wavy clouds and silhouettes of pyramids filling the screen, you can't deny the artistic vision of Jeremy Gillespie. With other work including The Shape of Water and It, Gillespie certainly has a specific look, and it's showcased here.
