10 Behind The Scenes Reasons For Harry Potter Character Traits
5. Voldemort's A Hugger
If you ask Potter fans about the most cringe-worthy moments in the entire series, a lot of them will mention the toe-curlingly awkward scene in Deathly Hallows - Part 2, where Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) joins Voldemort's side and receives a stiff, clammy hug from the Dark Lord.
Depending on who you ask it's either a genuinely embarrassing moment or a well-placed beat of bizarre comic relief, yet either way it wasn't actually part of the film's script at all.
In a 2011 Dragon Con interview, Tom Felton confirmed that Ralph Fiennes decided to go off-script and try something different, and director David Yates liked it enough that he used it in the final film:
"That wasn't in the script... We did that take like 25 times. He only hugged me once. It was a one-off thing that he just threw at me. Honestly, I was like, 'What the hell is he doing? Why is he hugging me in this weird fashion?' So, it was very strange. It was a surprise to me. I was baffled. I'm even more baffled that that was the take they used."
Love it or hate it, it's extremely weird, and that's seemingly precisely the sort of chaotic energy Yates wanted to generate from it.
