10 Behind The Scenes Reasons For Star Wars Character Traits
5. Mark Hamill Burst A Blood Vessel Mid Scene - Luke Skywalker's Penchant For Side Profile
Most fans are well aware of the physical transformation actor Mark Hamill went through in-between the shoots for A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back due to the Luke Skywalker star being unfortunately caught in the middle of a car accident that left him with a fractured cheek and nose.
However, this wasn't actually the first time the Jedi-in-training thespian was dealt some unfortunate facial damage during his early days as part of the galaxy far, far away.
Ever wondered why Skywalker spends the majority of A New Hope's much-loved trash compactor scene with his face half turned away from the camera and largely stuck in the same rooted spot? Well, after trying his damnedest to make himself "red-faced for a strangulated look", Hamill wound up bursting a blood vessel in his eye.
So, in order to get around his no doubt disturbing looking eye-ball, Lucas was forced to shoot around the bloody visual until Hamill had fully healed, leaving Skywalker in a largely restricted position throughout the crushing sequence despite Chewbacca, Leia Organa and Han Solo moving around like lunatics in the background trying to keep the compactor from squishing the gang.
I purposely made myself red-faced for a strangulated look, causing a blood vessel in my eye to burst. Afterwards-they had to shoot carefully to hide it until I healed. George told me I should've asked him 1st because w/ the lighting & red-filters it made no difference. #TrueStory https://t.co/877pbC6AWP— Mark Hamill (@MarkHamill) May 5, 2019
