10 Beloved And Critically Acclaimed Films That Aren't Actually Very Good

1. Avatar

Avatar I promise that I don't have a personal vendetta against James Cameron but it's probably almost unanimous at this point that Avatar is a very mediocre film at best. Yes, the special effects employed throughout and the 3D are amazing but the story and acting are so lackluster that it brings the whole product down. Besides, Hugo and Life of Pi make better use of their special effects and 3D than Avatar. Avatar only uses them to wow the audience instead of using them to help tell a more focused and emotionally resonant story like Hugo or Life of Pi. The narrative drive of the film is copied from Dances with Wolves and Pocahontas which has been said many times before but it really serves to point out how unoriginal and lackluster the plot is. It took 20 years for the technology to be up to the standard of James Cameron's vision but a significantly shorter amount of time to actually write the movie. The fact that it is the highest grossing film of all time even though it features cliched characters, an overlong, unexciting and poorly directed story is just absurd. I think now that 4 years have passed since it came out we can all agree that Avatar is not only one of the most over hyped movies of all time but also one of the most overrated. Thanks so much for sitting through my ranting. I'd love to hear your opinions in the comments.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
