10 Beloved And Critically Acclaimed Films That Aren't Actually Very Good

6. The Blind Side

The Blind Side Speaking of using poorly conceived melodrama to try and make a film seem like a grand social statement. This brings me to The Blind Side which is basically the modern day equivalent of Coming Home in the way it treats its issues of race relations and middle vs. lower class existence with a heavy handed story that only serves to devalue its main assets. The way that it was so forced and predictable is really the best thing going for it and the overuse of typical "Oscar bait" tropes makes the story devolve from a heartwarming true story to a plea for recognition in how important it is. The Blind Side is one of those movies that was made to make white people feel good by presenting the well off white family as the hero of a film that already has a compelling story at its heart, about overcoming racial issues, that just gets ignored. The main thing that truly makes The Blind Side awful instead of just pretty good is Sandra Bullock's terrible lead performance. Bullock has an incredibly limited acting range and her performance her goes from being annoying to absolutely cringe worthy at its worst. How she won an Oscar for that cliched role I will never know.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
