5. Star Wars: A New Hope

I know I'm going to take a lot of flack for this one but if you look at Star Wars: A New Hope from a subjective light it isn't very good. I used to let my fond, childhood reminiscence and love for the film stop me from admitting any real criticism but I can't do that for this article. While The Empire Strikes Back is indeed a masterpiece in the way that it mixes intelligent storytelling with dynamic action scenes A New Hope simply just can't compare. The acting is borderline wooden at the best of times, the characters are cardboard cutouts and the story is so basic that it all just feels far too predictable. The only saving grace of the film is the action scenes and special effects but even they can't completely save it from coming across as just ok when compared to the brilliant effects used in other Science Fiction movies at the time. 2001: A Space Odyssey still features the greatest use of special effects in film to this day and Alien uses them to create a fully realized world. A New Hope uses them to add a nice distraction to keep the audience from noticing how basic and cliched the movie is.
