10 Beloved Movie Legacies At Risk Of Being Ruined Forever
4. Shrek
Anything Disney can do, DreamWorks can do better?
We'll have to see about that, but it doesn't feel like a coincidence that both studios have fifth films revolving around beloved characters releasing next year, and they're only a few months apart from each other, with Toy Story 5 scheduled for a June release and Shrek 5 coming in December.
Although Toy Story is as adored and successful as animated franchises can be, Shrek seems to have become a cultural phenomenon accompanied by a somewhat strange subculture within the last couple of years, which will have inevitably led to DreamWorks getting the green light to make a fifth Shrek picture that will release 16 years after 2010's Shrek 4.
Legacy sequels are nothing out of the ordinary in this cinematic day and age, but a fifth Shrek film rings major alarm bells. The good news is that franchise favourites Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy are all reprising their respective roles, and Zendaya's casting as Shrek and Fiona's daughter, Felicia, will only bring more ticket sales due to the actor's astronomical appeal, talent, and following, so that's a win.
However, what isn't a win is what the rumoured plot will see happen, if any of the leaks are to be believed, that is, which will see Shrek and Donkey teleported to the real world with real human beings; what could possibly go wrong?
DreamWorks spots a billion-dollar opportunity that can't be squandered, but with the credit the Shrek franchise has already deposited in the bank, sometimes it's better to just quit while you're ahead.
