All things considered, 2016 has been a pretty good year to be a horror fan. We’ve had some genuinely scary and impressive offerings in the form of slow-burn indie horrors and foreign imports, with filmmakers dabbling in themes ranging from witchery and zombies to home invasion and brainwashing cults.

But for every brilliant film, an equally bad horror movie has reared its ugly head. Pointless remakes, uninspired plots and a distinct lack of the thrills and chills that make for good horror have all dragged the genre into lowbrow territory this year too. If you need proof of just how bad some of the stinkers released this year are, consider that a total of four horror movies managed to score a not so coveted 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In celebration of the good and commiseration of the bad, we bring to you the highs and lows of the horror genre in 2016.
