7. The Martian (2015)

The Martian may be all about Matt Damon being stranded on Mars, but it also co-stars both Chiwetel Ejiofor and Benedict Wong (who provided arguably the best comic relief in Doctor Strange) as two scientists instrumental in helping bring him home.

Driven by an excellent ensemble cast, terrific visuals, and a surprising amount of comic relief, The Martian is a deeply humanist survival drama that sees Ridley Scott delivering one of his all-time best directorial jobs.

Nominated for seven Oscars (including Best Picture but outrageously not Best Director), The Martian stands tall as a rare sci-fi flick that manages to be smart and hugely populist all the same time. Terrific.
