8. "Gotcha!" - Halloween (2018)

Malignant Jail
Universal

Though 2018's Halloween reboot-quel makes it abundantly clear that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) has spent literally decades preparing for a rematch with Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney), there's virtually no indication that her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) is of the same battle-hardened ilk.

Karen seems like the most ordinary 40-something mother in the world, and certainly not someone prepared to deal with a knife-wielding maniac.

This perception is surely aided by the casting of Judy Greer, who has been perpetually cast in movies as harmless soccer mom-types. And yet, she has quite the sneaky surprise waiting for Myers in the film's climax.

The final showdown takes place in Laurie's home, with Karen and her daughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) seemingly safely sealed in the basement away from Michael.

But Michael eventually opens the blocked entrance to the basement, where a seemingly terrified Karen waits with a gun pointed in his direction.

Karen calls out in fear for her mother, luring Michael to her position, but as soon as he pokes his head in the basement's doorway, she suddenly drops her hysterical demeanour and quips "Gotcha!" before shooting Michael square in the face.

Karen wasn't quite the unprepared victim she initially seemed to be - it was all part of the plan, to incapacitate Michael and then seal him in the basement before the house is set on the fire, leaving him to burn.

But of course, Halloween being Halloween, Michael lives to fight another day, and in the sequel Karen isn't quite so lucky, being killed by The Shape in the Empire Strikes Back-esque sequel-baiting final twist.
