The social thriller genre has become a prominent genre over the past few years, with the rising popularity of the recent acclaimed, Oscar-winning movies, Get Out and Parasite.

A "social thriller”, for the uninitiated, is a film that combines social commentary with its action and drama, expressing nuanced ideas through a potentially unassuming looking plot. And one of the earliest and most overlooked examples of the genre is Society, Brian Yuzna’s body horror thriller.

The film stars Billy Warlock as a wealthy teenager who discovers that his family are actually part of a gruesome orgy cult for the upper class.

Although the film obviously fails to live up to the high expectations of the classy and sophisticated Get Out (it’s very schlocky and cartoony), this doesn't make it any less interesting to watch as one of the forefathers of such a fascinating genre.

Without Society, we may not have had Parasite today.
