10 Best Accidental Horror Movies
5. Marathon Man
Seeing an innocent character becoming immersed in an elaborate plot they know nothing about has led to some incredibly entertaining movies. Films like The Fugitive, The Man Who Knew Too Much and North by Northwest have all presented such an idea well, but Marathon Man took it to another level by adding some strong horror elements.
Marathon Man follows Babe - played by Dustin Hoffman - as he is unwittingly embroiled in a diamond plot thanks to his secret US operative brother. This results in Babe being relentlessly pursued by the terrifying Nazi war criminal Dr Christian Szell, The White Angel of Auschwitz.
The entire runtime is filled to the brim with tension and suspense, as you feel for poor Babe and know that danger lurks around every corner. Still, one specific set of scenes push the film over the edge, those being the infamous dentistry torture segments.
After being captured by the primary antagonist, they seek to get information from him, repeatedly asking, "is it safe?" as they torture him using dentistry tools to expose nerves in his mouth and extracting as much pain as possible. It's truly disgusting to watch and had audiences feeling queasy and too afraid to visit the dentist themselves.
