It was almost inevitable that the infamous Lars Von Trier would make an appearance on this list. This auteur of disturbing avant-garde cinema is known for generating some of the most unsettling flicks ever created. Many of his titles stray deliberately into horror, such as Antichrist or The House That Jack Built. However, even when trying to make something outside of the genre, there's still a memory of it.

Melancholia is a strange science fiction tale that masterfully pulls between a grounded emotional relationship and a wide reaching cosmic catastrophe. It follows a pair of sisters named Claire and Justine as they go about their lives, attempting to navigate their strained relationship, and remain civil.

If that wasn't bad enough, a stray and unperceived planet named Melancholia soon appears and is set to collide with Earth. The movie then falls down a rabbit hole of science, fear and anxiety, as the world's fate slowly but surely, becomes sealed with death.

There's nothing more horrifying than the notion that a world-ending collision is coming, and you are powerless to stop it. This horrific sense of dread permeates the film, as the certainty of the character's doom gives the flick this nihilistic outlook and plays honestly and horrifically into cosmic horror.
