3. The Lighthouse - Annihilation

Alex Garland's masterful sci-fi horror concludes in stunning fashion as sole survivor Lena (Natalie Portman) makes it to the lighthouse at the centre of the alien phenomenon known as the shimmer.

After learning of the fate of her husband Kane (Oscar Isaac) and witnessing Dr. Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh) disintegrate, Lena faces off against a metallic doppelganger of herself which forms from a drop of her blood.

Lena attempts to escape the lighthouse but finds the doppelganger mirroring her movements precisely, resulting in a creepy dance-off of sorts, in which Lena is very nearly suffocated as the entity presses her against the door.

Lena eventually manages to place a phosphorus grenade in the doppelganger's hands, setting it on fire and allowing Lena to escape. Moments later, the lighthouse and the surrounding structures created by the shimmer also set alight and disintegrate.

For those craving something different from the usual $200 million explosion-fests, Annihilation's eerie and deeply unsettling final showdown was just the refreshing tonic indeed.

It leaves plenty ambiguous for the viewer to figure out for themselves, but the eye-popping visuals and metaphorical qualities of Lena literally battling herself are self-evident.
