10 Best Animated Movies NOT By Disney Or Pixar
3. Shrek (2001)
Animation Studio: DreamWorks
DreamWorks’ story about an ogre and a donkey who go on a quest to save a princess from a dragon was a surprisingly huge hit when it was released.
As bizarre as the premise is, Shrek’s awareness of its own ridiculousness is its greatest strength, as much of the humour comes from the parodying of other fairy tales.
The voice acting is also a frequent source of humour. In particular, Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy – who play Shrek and Donkey respectively – have a wonderful partnership wrought with both conflict and comedy.
Moreover, the soundtrack is loaded with catchy numbers. ‘Bad Reputation’, ‘I’m On My Way’, and ‘All Star’ are especially memorable. The latter has even become synonymous with the opening montage of the film.
Shrek is a perfect example of why it’s worth taking risks. On paper, the story seems very odd, yet the final product turned out to be a much-deserved financial and critical success.
