10 Best Animated Movies Of The 2010s (That Aren't Disney Or Pixar)

8. Boy And The World

Boy and the World was released through GKIDS, who are an incredible company that deserved far more time and credit than many people will give them. All things considered, Boy and the World is a very abstract movie, even by modern indie animated standards. Watching it feels like you€™ve tumbled down the kaleidoscope hole. Set in a mythical country, Boy and the World follows the story of Cuca who leaves his rural world behind to search for his father in the big city. It€™s a film about a child exploring the wider world, the realisation of object permanence and the colliding worlds of the landscape and urban worlds. If you ever played the fantastic Playstation game Hohukum, this film will remind you of that visually. It€™s so simple and yet so dazzling, almost as if it was drawn by a child with a set of crayons. The story and pacing is wonderful, it could have easily been written by Paulo Coelho, but the true magic of this South American made movie comes from the music. Full of samba beats, hip hop and traditional Brazilian folk music built on pan pipes and fireworks. Nominated for an Academy Award this year, Boy and the World deserves all the indie plaudits that has come and will come it€™s way in the near future. If this movie tickled your sweet spot then I'd also recommend Don Hertzfeldt's brilliant It's Such a Beautiful Day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqdrwu0NvY8
