10 Best Anime Movies Not Made By Studio Ghibli
3. Perfect Blue
This is one for the readers out there who love to be scared senseless. While many people tend to look down on animation as a medium for horror, they clearly haven't watched Perfect Blue as this tense, phycological thriller will have you sleeping with a nightlight and peeking around every corner.
Perfect Blue follows the horrific experiences of Mima Kirigoe as she attempts to leave her career as an Idol (Japanese pop singer) and transition into an acting career. However, the change is hardly peaceful, as she deals with an obsessive stalker fan and seems to lose her mind as a ghostly relic of her past haunts her.
Naturally, the movie has a lot to say about celebrity culture and the influence that fandom can have on a person. The creeping ever-dangerous sense of threat looming makes you fear for Mima. Still, she also acts as a strong representation of all women in the industry who suffer from sexualisation and obsession.
As if that wasn't enough, the plot itself is full of so many twists and turns that the eventual reveal is like a eureka moment that makes the entire experience fall into place. It's terrifying, creepy and an essential watch.
