A more recent example of an anti-Valentine's movie is this 2017 exploitation crime thriller from director Trent Haaga, in which a hapless young man's weakness for the ladies repeatedly lands him up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

Based on the novel by Bryan Smith, 68 Kill stars Matthew Gray Gubler as Chip, a nervous trailer park resident helplessly smitten with his clearly abusive girlfriend Liza (AnnaLyne McCord). When she bullies him into helping her break into her landlord's lavish house in order to steal the $68,000 in his safe, Chip submissively bends to her will: but once the money is in their hands, things naturally get a whole lot crazier.

It should be noted that McCord's Liza is by no means the only crazy woman Chip crosses paths with on the twisted odyssey that ensues. Essentially, 68 Kill amounts to 90-ish minutes of one man suffering a wide range of unspeakable mistreatment from a succession of beautiful women.

Given what a button-pushing topic gender relations are these days, 68 Kill certainly invites debate as to whether it's feminist, misogynistic, or some weird combination of the two... but either way, it makes for blackly humorous, and often quite startling and at times enormously unpleasant viewing.

Not necessarily a first date movie, then.

Ben Bussey hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
