2. 12 Monkeys (1995)
Bruce Willis must be pretty familiar with the end of the world, as 12 Monkeys sees him thrown back in time to uncover info about the genetically engineered virus apparently released by a terrorist organisation that has caused a near mass-extinction of the human race in the present. Of course, first of all he's got to convince everyone that he's not gone mad as he raves about saving the future that he's rather imprecisely thrown back from.
Terry Gilliam's sci-fi thriller is intelligent and engrossing, with unique ideas to offer and a very particular on-screen style that will no doubt reward repeat viewings. The film could not work without the excellent character acting on show, with Brad Pitt's madcap mastermind a particular highlight.
Despite the somewhat convoluted plot, each twist is carefully established early in the film so that they all unfurl and fall into place perfectly. This may well be a bizarre version of science and time travel, but as long as you commit a bit of a focus to 12 Monkeys, Gilliam will take you for a real satisfying ride that will keep you guessing right up till the credits start rolling.
