10 Best B-Movie Horrors From The '80s
7. The Deadly Spawn (1983)
The Deadly Spawn centers on a meteor crashing to earth and unleashing deadly parasite-like worms with some very sharp teeth. Determined to feast and grow, the pesky spores invade an isolated farmhouse and chow down.
This film has everything one could want from an 80's B-Movie monster flick. First of all, it is saturated with gore! These alien creatures show no mercy as they gobble up one family member after another, spitting out limbs left and right.
Next on the B-Movie checklist we have creature effects that... aren't entirely convincing, admittedly. These man-eating parasites often end up looking more like adorable Venus fly traps than anything remotely threatening.
Finally, we have the acting. Oh, boy, the "acting". The strongest performance in this picture comes from the sci-fi obsessed 10 year-old, who seems to be the only one taking his job seriously. Those around him gawk into the camera and deliver their lines as though always stifling a laugh.
However, none of this is meant to shine a negative light on The Deadly Spawn. In fact, it all works in its favor. The movie remains interesting, capturing a gloomy, isolated atmosphere quite well. Despite the obvious budgetary restrictions, it's obvious this movie was made with love and that love for the project makes for quite an enjoyable watch.
