10 Best Benicio Del Toro Movie Performances

8. Richard Matt - Escape At Dannemora (2018)

Snatch Benicio Del Toro
Showtime

One of del Toro's most recent performances, and his only foray into television to make this list, Escape at Dannemora sees the actor play Richard Matt, a real-life murderer known for his numerous prison escapes. The mini-series depicts Matt's relationship with fellow 2015 escapee David Sweat (Paul Dano) and Joyce Mitchell (Patricia Arquette), a prison worker who aids their escape.

It's clear watching del Toro's portrayal of Matt, someone who, all things considered, shouldn't be massively endearing, that the actor felt very passionately about the project. He manages to capture the idea that Matt, whilst a criminal and a bad man, is also just a human - someone with feelings, thoughts and desires like everyone else.

That's not to excuse Matt, of course, but it is a testament to del Toro's ability to get inside the mind of complex, real-life people and put their best and worst moments on screen with such conviction. It's a physical role, and looks mentally tiring, but del Toro makes it look easy.
