10 Best Benicio Del Toro Movie Performances
6. Che Guevara - Che (2008)
Che is one of the longest films ever screened at the Cannes Film Festival, clocking in at four hours and thirty minutes and officially released in two parts after its initial screening. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, it's an undeniable epic, with a clever, time-twisting narrative and enough action and detail to fill hours upon hours of documentaries.
The film tells the tale of Che Guevara, the famous revolutionary who played a major role in the Cuban Revolution. Del Toro is required to balance the changing ideologies and shifting personality traits of the divisive figure throughout the film's runtime, following Che as he battles asthma, befriends Fidel Castro (Demian Bichir) and leads his guerrilla followers to war.
It's a subtle and powerful performance, in which del Toro is smarmy, intelligent, wise, impassioned and seems to tower above the others with whom he shares the screen - both in personality and stature. No stranger to portraying historical figures (look no further than Richard Matt or his also-great turn as Pablo Escobar in 2014), and Che still stands as one of the best examples of his talents.
