2. The Town That Dreaded Sundown

Originally penned as a remake of the 1976 film of the same name, The Town That Dreaded Sundown eventually morphed into a meta-sequel/remake, where the original film exists in-universe and plays an integral role in the plot of the film.

Now the original 1976 film is loosely based on a real series of murders that happened in Texarkana in 1946. These would go on to become known as the Texarkana Moonlight Murders and have since remained unsolved. Of course, the original film hammed up the facts quite a bit and has become what is now considered a cult classic horror film. The city of Texarkana actually plays the film every Halloween for the city during an event called Movies in the Park.

The 2014 sequel/remake revolves around this 70s film, and touches base on the following the movie has in Texarkana. Much like Scream, The Town That Dreaded Sundown's characters use a prior knowledge of a horror movie to be able to dictate what is going to happen next in the film. Detectives go back to the film to see what kill happens next and where. The direct use of this old footage adds a refreshing layer to the horror.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown is way smarter than it has any right to be, and its use of meta knowledge and the way it goes about using this old film as inspiration is flawless. There's no doubt that this film is one of the most overlooked horror movie remakes of all time.
