7. Re-Animator
The brilliantly quirky Jeffrey Combs stars in this adaption of H.P. Lovecraft's story; Herbert West: Re-Animator.
West is an eccentric medical student who transfers from an Austrian school, following the death of his professor, Dr. Gruber. West’s area of medical interest is in reanimation of the dead. He successfully brings Dr. Gruber back to life with his serum but gets the dosage wrong resulting in horrible side effects. He enrolls in school in America to continue his studies under Dr. Carl Hill.
He rents a room from fellow medical student Dan Cain and his girlfriend Megan Halsey, played by scream queen Barbara Crampton. West convinces Dan to help him test a serum, after proving it works on Dan's dead cat, which can bring the dead back to life. They advance West’s experiments to mostly disastrous and chaotic results.
Re-Animator Is a genuine classic of the comedy horror genre. It is gory and hilarious and is held up throughout with a terrifically unhinged performance from Combs.
There are several stand-out moments which are mainly the result of West's serum tests: the highlight being an insane sex scene involving Dr. Hill's severed head, Megan, and her undead, lobotomised father.
