10 Best Chosen Ones In Movie History
6. Ofelia - Pan's Labyrinth
Chosen One Title: Princess of the Underworld
Ofelia is different because her status as a chosen one is up for debate. She is supposedly Princess Moanna - the reincarnation of a princess from the underworld - tasked by Pan/ Faun to retrieve items to prove her worth to enter the underworld again.
But it is convenient that every time she confronts a magical creature or a magical world, she is alone. It is coincidental that the dining room where the monster called the Pale Man resides look remarkably similar to the dining room of the film’s human villain, Captain Vidal. Oh, and she just so happens to be the centre of attention. In short, there is a big chance that all the fantastic elements in the film are just all in Ofelia’s head.
What makes Ofelia a character fitting for this movie is that her character traits are both what make her relatable and perfect to drive the mystery of the fantasy elements. Based on his easy acceptance of Pan’s claims, she desires to feel special and dreams of adventure, just like any kid. It is completely understandable; especially in a bleak world like Ofelia’s that she has an active imagination that makes her passionate about fantastic tales. She also loves her mother and unborn brother, but will be scared of her life while trying to protect them.
It is the innocence of a child that makes the bleak and war-torn world more frightening and tragic when she is in danger. In the end, she dies, and it is bittersweet that we don’t know if the visions of her magical parents and the kingdom are real or not while she lies in blood.
