Chosen One Title: Anung Un Rama

Hellboy is an interesting exercise of the nature vs. nurture argument. He is Anung Un Rama, the son of the devil with obvious devilish features, summoned from hell to earth, destined to bring forth the apocalypse with his right hand of doom.

And yet he is raised on earth as a Catholic and works hard as a rough and tough protector of earth from other demons. He is not the pinnacle of good moral values either, he has quirks that are unrefined; he is a regular big drinker, a smoker and a glutton who doesn’t care how he presents himself. He has a temper and is probably the first guy who would start a bar fight.

In essence, he is just like any other guy, not entirely good, yet not entirely a bad guy either. He is human; like some guys, he has daddy issues. Like most people, he has relationship problems.

But he still has problems being reminded of the evil creature he is destined to be. That’s why he regularly shaves off his horns. His adopted father was always there to remind him of who he is and who he wants to be. So when he died, Hellboy has to be strong enough to continue being a decent guy without a crutch.

What makes a man a man? This is the essence of Hellboy’s story.
