10 Best Comfort Horror Movies
5. Zombieland (2009)
Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg star as an unlikely duo of survivors who must navigate the new world, post-zombie-apocalypse, while trying to save the damsels in distress, trying not to kill Bill Murray, and trying to overcome their hatreds of uncleanliness and clowns. Not exactly a guaranteed winner for the next big zombie movie, but something about Zombieland really hit home.
As a result, Ruben Fleischer had us all on the back foot in 2009 with his debut feature -- an improbable 88-minute zombie-horror-comedy flick – but it made bank at the box office, spawned its own sequel and helped popularise a genre-bending shift in cinema alongside such contemporaries as Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass (2010).
Be that as it may, many of us would have expected it to be a flash in the pan. Alas, it is still as strong as ever, and arguably gets better with every watch. The combination of the road trip format, the tangible chemistry between its four leads (with Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin rounding out the squad) and the pervasive zombie threat just work. Despite the blood, guts and tear-jerking backstories of heartbreak and loss, Fleischer's is a world that's so easy and enjoyable to return to, it has us wishing against our better interests that we could go there for real.
