8. Huntress: Crossbow At The Crossroads

Birds Of Prey Comics
DC Comics

This story by Paul Levitz takes Huntress out of Gotham and its bordering towns to the Mediterranean climate of her ancestral homeland: Italy. Holiday is the furthest thing from her mind though as she attempts to break up a gun smuggling and human trafficking ring that goes all the way to the top.

But first, a brief history of Huntress for the uninitiated: like Bruce Wayne, she grew up an orphan, but she’s also the last remaining member of the mafia family the Bertinellis. She chose a life of justice and heroism to try and wipe clean the stain of crimes and bloodshed on her family name. With that in mind, taking down the mafia is personal for her, not just business.

Levitz is Huntress’ original creator, but this is from his return run and it’s hard to recall a story more action packed or gritty. Cry For Blood is a great one to read if you want to explore Huntress’ personal life, and Crossbow At The Crossroads reinforces her as an action star.

It’s likely that in Birds Of Prey we’ll get a dash of both, so reading both should stand you in good stead.
