10 Best Comic Storylines Featuring The Birds Of Prey Characters

7. JLA: Year One

Birds Of Prey Comics
DC comics

Riffing off the idea for Batman: Year One, Mark Waid’s graphic novel explored the origins of the Justice League of America’s founding members: The Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and last but not least, Black Canary.

Canary is the only one to feature in the upcoming Birds of Prey, so it doesn’t give you the deep dive into the team dynamics and character arcs that some other ones here do. However, it’s such a great story which manages to explore Black Canary alongside a host of non-Birds of Prey heroes, so it’s definitely worth a read nonetheless.

For most people, the Justice League is all about DC’s three biggest powerhouses: Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Without the three of them present here though, the likes of Dinah Lance get more room to breathe.

The storyline fleshes her out better than most (arguably any) of her solo arcs, giving her a backstory that’s compelling, sympathetic and relatable all at once.

Sure, reading this gives you a lot of information on characters not in Birds Of Prey, but they’re wonderful characters in their own right with tales well worth discovering.
