7. We Are What We Are

Based on a 2010 Mexican film of the same name, We Are What We Are exceeded expectations on its release and was met with a host of great reviews. People were expecting another bad remake of a great foreign-language film, a cynical bloodbath with mediocre performances and a trying plot. They got the exact opposite!

Revolving around the Parker family, the film sees the family’s two daughters struggle to take on the role of their recently deceased mother when it comes to their weird annual rituals. The rituals in question aren’t your usual religious prayer circles or Eucharist, instead it’s all-out cannibalism.

When their father brings home a captive to feast on and police interference threatens to blow the whole operation wide open, we see cracks begin to form in the family as the two young girls come into their own despite the shadow of their family’s history.

It is bloody, it is horrific but it’s also well-made and a good example of a tasteful cannibal movie (if you’ll excuse the pun). If you get the chance, watch the original too and see which one you prefer.
