Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age tale is one of the best in the genre. With its stellar cast and sharp screenplay, there is much to love about Lady Bird.

The comedy is much darker than the average coming-of-age movie, and the combination of Saoirse Ronan’s lead performance and Gerwig’s writing results in a number of laugh-out-loud moments.

Yet the screenplay also has heart. Throughout the movie there are plenty of lines that really resonant, with many of them coming from the interactions between Lady Bird and her parents. Crucially, such lines are quotable without being corny.

The central arc of the movie is also highly satisfying. Though it would have been great to see more from these characters, the story couldn’t have ended in a better place.

Given how many clichés there are in the coming-of-age genre, Lady Bird is a breath of fresh air with a flawless execution.
