10 Best Creature Features Of The 1980s
5. Society
Brian Yuzna's body-horror Society follows Bill, a young man who lives in his parent's luxurious estate in California.
Despite having everything he could dream of, Bill feels like he doesn't fit in with his peers. And when he notices his friends and family exhibiting strange behaviour, he becomes convinced they're hiding something.
Society takes its sweet time setting up its mystery. As a result, first-timers could get impatient since they're expecting conventional scares. The big dark secret is hinted at a couple of times, but viewers won't know for certain what's really going on as the major twist is dealt with subtlety until the end.
Though the climax is well-known nowadays, it's a sight to behold even when you know it's coming. When Bill returns home, he's horrified to learn every significant person in his life is a shapeshifter who indulges in human sacrifices and melding their bodies together for sexual pleasure.
Although the special effects are top-notch, the slimy textures, crimson lighting, and warped perspective turn this already freaky scene into pure nightmare fuel. While it could become a total schlockfest, the rampant tension, sharp social commentary, and vomit-inducing visuals helped Society establish its reputation as an '80s gem.
