8. The Place Beyond The Pines (2013)
The Crime? The Place Beyond the Pines follows three different sets of characters over the course of the film as they all find themselves unfortunate enough to be suffering at the hands of the same series of crimes committed by Luke Glanton (Ryan Gosling). Glanton uses his exceptional bike skills from his career as a motorcycle stuntman to give him the perfect getaway after robbing a string of banks dotted over Schenectady, New York. When Glaton is eventually caught and gunned down while unnamed by Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper), the children of the two men must inherit the conflict left by their father's actions. Why Is It Great? In a genre which occupies itself so relentlessly with the present, The Place Beyond the Pines demonstrates how the crimes of just two men can spawn disharmony which will affect the lineage of those involved for generations after. The robbery and escape scenes in The Place Beyond The Pines are some of the most visually intense in recent cinema only Ben Afflecks The Town (which is an excellent crime film in its own right) really rivals it.
