This is the one everyone was waiting for, and Nolan did not disappoint. The Dark Knight Rises is hands down the greatest DC comic book movie ever made, and smart money says it stays that way beyond Snyders Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and his subsequent Justice League. Of course Nolan had an advantage. Where Warner Bros. and Snyder are looking to set up a franchise and introduce new characters, Nolan was bringing his to a close and therefore had a freer hand to do with his characters as he pleased. Audiences were faced with the ultimate possibility: Is this as far as Batman comes? Is this where Batman falls? The question of mortality dictates precisely how high the stakes are in a film, and they will likely never be higher than they were here. Marvel and DCs respective Cinematic Universes are too lucrative to end anytime soon something confirmed by Kevin Feiges recent reveal that his calendar is already planned up to 2028 and its this notion that earns The Dark Knight Rises the top spot. Nolan could have killed the Batman. That he didnt is irrelevant; audiences waited with baited breath to see which way the wind would blow, because all bets were off. Warner Bros. promised an epic conclusion to the Batman trilogy, and Nolan delivered. If you feel Christopher Reeves version of Superman, Michael Keatons take on Batman, or any other of DCs long history of comic book movies are criminally under-represented here, be sure to sound off in the comments below!
Movie / TV enthusiast with a DVD and Blu-ray collection bigger than I'd care to admit. If anyone is offering creative / furniture solutions to house them, I'm all ears.
