4. Contorted To Death - The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

fear street 1994

The third Conjuring movie didn't live up to the quality of its predecessors, but still delivered enough supernatural thrills to be a worthwhile watch for fans of the series.

One of its highlights occurs right at the end of the film, when the occultist Ilsa (Eugenie Bondurant) is brutally murdered by the very demon she herself summoned.

Because Ilsa failed to complete the curse she raised the demon for, the demon turns on her and collects her soul instead, which she achieves by painfully contorting Ilsa's body, snapping her fingers, limbs, and finally her neck until she dies.

It's far from the most gratuitous death you'll see in an R-rated horror movie this year, but thanks to bone-crunching sound editing and some stellar effects work, you feel every moment of it.
