How can a movie made by mere mortals live up to the hype a galaxy far, far away generated during its heyday? The short answer is it can't.

Is Star Wars: The Force Awakens a great film? Absolutely - it mended the galactic fences damaged by George Lucas's reviled prequel trilogy, won back scores of fans and caught a generation of new ones in its tractor beam.

The trouble is, nothing in the cosmos will ever be considered equal to A New Hope and Empire Strikes back, no matter how well it pays homage to their formula.

JJ Abrams played in safe with The Force Awakens, bringing us an old-school Star Wars film that doesn't skimp on thrills or fan service, but that didn't quite suffice.

Star Wars is more than a line of movies to its most ardent fans. It's a freaking religion, and when something is considered so sacred there's no living up to the hype.
