Quite fittingly, the film sitting atop this list manages to capture and put into perspective one of the true horrors that we as human beings face on planet Earth.

In 2004, disaster struck in the Indian Ocean when a giant Tsunami caused utter chaos for the region. It was one of the more brutal natural disasters of our time, with over 200,000 people reported to have lost their lives.

Spanish director A.J. Bayona expertly, or heartbreakingly, captures the story of one families anguish in the face of complete and utter devastation.

Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts deliver some of their finest work in The Impossible. A story of determination from the family to come through something so awful really draws you in as the viewer.

Unlike some other films on this list, The Impossible is not the biggest box-office success. In fact, it's probably amongst the movies within these ten entries that a lot of people won't have seen.

However, your writer here tasks you with watching this one.

It's a truly brilliant piece of filmmaking, and one that deserves to be seen by as many people as possible.
