In 1996, Jan de Bont brought us the truly horrifying realism that tornadoes - or twisters - bring to the table.

While we had seen disaster films previously, few had brought us such open devastation and fear as Twister displayed. The sheer enormity of the giant wind storms making their way to ground level was frightening enough in itself, while the destruction on display brought home the enormity of said twisters.

In the late 90s, it was a time where technology was advancing and boundaries were being pushed. Twister, then, is a good example of a film trying to outdo what came before it.

Like most of the best disaster films that come about, Twister hits the right notes because it is very much about something that happens on a regular basis.

Americans are faced, in some states anyway, with tornadoes on a fairly regular basis. Twister brought the horror of one of nature's more frightening phenomena to the rest of the world. Plus, it also made for a pretty cool ride in Universal Studios.
