7. Gravity

Few disaster movies have been a box-office success and garnered critical acclaim quite like Gravity.

Sandra Bullock delivers a masterful performance as the medical engineer, Dr. Ryan Stone. Alfonso Cuaron's story of a space mission gone wrong is not necessarily anything new or out of the ordinary but, crucially, the intense offering from Bullock draws everyone in.

It's a masterful piece of storytelling that keeps you gripped to your screen throughout. The will she won't she aspect of the film in relation to Stone giving up or fighting her way back to earth mean it's edge of your seat stuff.

While some might argue it's not exactly a disaster film per se, there's enough destruction and space carnage to justify its inclusion.

Like all the best disaster films, it highlights the real dangers that we, as human beings, sometimes face. Space exploration is all fun and games until something goes horribly wrong.

Gravity is an excellent depiction of space missions gone bad.
