'Houston, we have a problem'. It's arguably one of the most famous lines in film history, nevermind just on the disaster movie front.

Another film based on real-life events, Ron Howard, along with the expertly put together cast of Tom Hanks, Ed Harris, and Kevin Bacon, delivers a masterclass in telling the story of a journey into space gone wrong.

As disaster movies go, Apollo 13 sits highly-rated amongst critics and is one of the bigger box-office success stories for the genre. It did well in terms of awards, too, winning two Oscars in 1996 for Best Sound and Best Film Editing.

Indeed, in big categories such as Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor, Apollo 13 only lost out to the exceptional Braveheart, while Ed Harris lost out to the even more exceptional Kevin Spacey for his role in The Usual Suspects.

For all the great work Tom Hanks has done in his career, Apollo 13 ranks right up there with some of his very best performances. It truly is brilliant, brilliant disaster movie.
