10 Best Disaster Movies Of All Time
4. Independence Day (1996)
Roland Emmerich's 1996 blockbuster epic took the box-office by storm, raking in well in excess of $800m. ]
Independence Day is, in essence, your typical all American, we will win out at all costs type film we have seen numerous times from Hollywood. However, there's something just that bit more special about this one.
Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum inevitably help the film deliver. Smith, in particular, is at his charming best as determined fighter pilot Steven Hiller. In fact, it's in this film that your writer here find his best Will Smith moment, with Captain Hiller beautifully clocking an alien to the words, 'Welcome to Earth!!'.
Despite the inevitable success America has in bringing down the mammoth spaceships that have entered the Earth's atmosphere, there are moments where you genuinely think there's no way out.
Hiller's dog, Boomer, narrowly escapes a tunnel blast, while epic explosions of world-famous landmarks such as the Empire State Building and the White House are brilliantly captured.
In terms of destruction and the fear of the unknown, Independence Day hits the spot. The less said about the 2016 sequel, however, the better.
