When we talk about remakes, we always have the same question, 'Did it stand up to the original'? Sometimes it's a yes, more often than not it's a no. However, with The Jungle Book, it is a no with an asterisk. It's better.

The Jungle Book is a beloved original Disney animation in its own right but was totally bettered by its successor. Jon Favreau helmed the film and not only adapted the original, he somehow found a way to make it more charming, more frightening, and more Bill Murray.

The whole cast is supreme here, Neel Sethi was our ideal Mowgli, Ben Kingsley is Bagheera in every way, Scarlett Johansson mesmerised us as Kaa, Christopher Walken was our Don Vit.. sorry, our King Louis, and Lupia Nyongo & Giancarlo Esposito were great as our Wolves.

Now, Idris Elba as Sheer Khan, he was something special. He was terrifying and vengeful with every word he uttered and if not because of one other performance, would have stolen the show.

Simply, Bill Murray, it is all that is needed to be said, never has he been so suited to a character as he was Baloo. He is what Robin Williams was as the Genie, what Tom Hanks is to Woody, he was ours. Murray's Baloo totally dominates every scene he is in, against some real heavyweights, with ease and makes you love him totally and without exception.

A brilliant film that dispelled its original, The Jungle Book was a hit at the box-office making just shy of a billion dollars and will have a forthcoming sequel due to that success.
