10 Best Dog Movies

9. Isle Of Dogs (2018)

Lady And The Tramp
Fox Searchlight

Isle of Dogs is different to the rest of the entries on this list in how it presents dogs without covering their sentimentality to humans, or general adorableness. It’s still a terrific movie, which instead depicts the intelligence and the physical abilities of the domestic pet, whilst still maintaining an air of comedy about their typical habits and behaviour.

This is Wes Anderson’s second animated movie, and is filled with all the ‘Wes’ tropes that we’ve come to expect from the director – symmetrical framing, complex characters, view from above shots, and so on. He also uses the medium of stop-motion to his advantage to make the dogs seem almost real.

Isle of Dogs is futuristic, complex and thoroughly detailed. As an outbreak of dog flu spreads across the city of Megasaki, Japan, all dogs are sent to Trash Island. On this new place, a young boy named Atari sets out with five other pets to find his lost dog, Spots, but is met with some problems along the way.
